Mary Hunter, Esq.
Director, Housing Counseling & Services Program
Mary Hunter, Esq. is the Director of the Housing Counseling Program at HIP. Mary has overseen HIP’s geographic expansion into Montgomery County, as well as programmatic expansion by doubling bilingual staff to address both the foreclosure crisis and the affordable rental shortage.
Since joining HIP in 2008, Mary has worked to expand housing opportunities and protections for low- and moderate-income Marylanders through her contributions to the boards of the Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition, the Coalition for Homeownership Preservation in Prince George’s County, the Capital Area Foreclosure Network, and through her participation in Governor O’Malley’s Maryland Foreclosure Taskforce. Throughout her career, Mary has pushed to increase protections for low-income families, from enforcing legal rights of migrant workers at Southern Migrant Legal Services to advocating for tenants at Legal Aid Society in New York City.
Mary is a licensed Maryland attorney, and is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese. She holds a J.D. degree from Northeastern University School of Law, and a B.A. degree from Northwestern University. When not at work, she’ll take any chance she can get to travel to far flung parts of our globe. To contact Mary, call 301-699-0425 or send an email. She is located in our Hyattsville office.
